Official Blessing and Opening of the School Extension

Sunday 24th November, Ogonnelloe N.S. was a hub of excitement and activity as pupils, staff, parents, grandparents, local dignitaries and members of the wider community gathered together. The occasion was the official opening and blessing of the new extension to Ogonnelloe N.S., which consists of an extra classroom, entrance foyer and ancillary spaces.

The event was marked with Mass in St. Mary’s Church, celebrated by Fr. David Carroll. Returning to the school grounds, the sound of the school bell being rung heralded the commencement of the ceremony. Sarah King led pupils and guests in song, followed by a reading from St Paul by sixth class pupil Daniel Weir.

Principal Marie Roberts then addressed the huge crowd that had turned out for the ceremony. She extended a warm welcome to all attendees including Councillors Pat Burke and Joe Carey, past staff members Damian Heaney and Mary Hogan and members of the Board of Management and Parents Association of Ogonnelloe N.S.

Mrs Roberts expressed her thanks to Joe Cooney and the construction team of East Clare Construction for their workmanship. She thanked Mr. Michael O’Brien, engineer, for his dedication and professionalism.

Mrs Roberts praised the talented Board of Management. She especially thanked Donal O’Connor for handling the technical issues with the DES and construction team and Francis McNulty as Treasurer of the BOM for ensuring the required funds were available and duly dispatched. She also acknowledged the work of Chairperson Maurice Kerr for his oversight role and the support of William O’Brien for his many sundry activities and for his energy and enthusiasm. The input of the remaining BOM members in other ancillary activities was much appreciated also.

Mrs Roberts also complimented the staff and pupils for their patience and perseverance in working in restricted conditions while waiting for the new building to be completed.

Fr. David performed the blessing of the new extension. Following the blessing, the ribbon of the new extension was cut by Maurice Kerr, Chairperson, BOM, supported by sixth class twins Ryan and Fionn McKeogh.

The large crowd was then treated to musical entertainment by current and past pupils. Refreshments were provided by the Parents Association and guests were invited to view the bright and airy school extension. The day’s events were a true reflection of the vibrancy and great community spirit attached to Ogonnelloe N.S.
