Fifth Class enjoyed a Green School’s Workshop on Tuesday the 5th of November, 2024. The workshop was funded by the Community foundation of Ireland in conjunction with Ogonnelloe Community Council.
The purpose of the workshop was to Explore Ireland’s native tree species and discuss why they are important for biodiversity. It was a follow up to a workshop held in November 2023 where the children sowed acorns and hazel nuts directly into a tree nursery on the school grounds.
During the workshop the children observed the growth that had taken place in the tree nursery since the workshop in 2023. Many of the hazel nuts and acorns that were planted in the nursery beds are now strong saplings.
The children planted guelder rose and crab apple seeds in containers that will be placed in the poly tunnel over the winter.
They also planted some seeds directly into the nursery bed to compare the germination process. We are looking forward to monitoring their progress over the coming months.
See the following report by Wild Way Ecology which outlines the activities carried out by the children on the day and contains some lovely photos.
