What is the Green School Flag?
Ogonnelloe National School actively participates in Green Schools Ireland. This is a program designed to educate pupils, staff and the local community on how to be more environmentally friendly in our locality. The program is broken down in to 8 core themes and each theme has its own separate flag that the school must strive to achieve. It takes two years to educate the pupils on each theme and the flag for that theme may be awarded to the school once an assessment has taken place. This assessment is to indicate whether the school has met all the objectives that is needed to achieve the flag. So far our local school has achieved 5 green flags: Litter/waste, energy, water, travel and biodiversity. The next flag that our school is striving to achieve is based on global citizenship, litter and waste.
Our Mission
We strive to protect and promote a healthy environment and planet. We do this by promoting the core values of each Green Flag and by adapting these values into the ethos of our school. The children are actively engaged with our school garden and continue to uphold the values of the Green Schools in the classroom and at home. We enjoy participating in projects and events that spread awareness and education to the wider community. It is important to us that the environment can grow and flourish just like the students of Ogonnelloe.
